YOUR NEW PUPPY

There are many questions while you decide where to get your puppy. And then, there are many more questions before you bring your puppy home. Hopefully, the following information will be helpful to you.

Please DO NOT take your baby to PetSmart, the Park, the Groomer or any other public place where other dogs have been!

IT IS NOT SAFE!!!

However...You should socialize your new puppy. Feel free to take him/her to new places like Grandmas, rides in the car, in crowds, expose them to noises, and different facets of life. Just be careful when around other people, have them wash their hands before holding your puppy. I know this sounds extreme, but just be careful.

Be sure if your puppy is around other dogs that those dogs are healthy and vaccinated. Even go as far as to say that those dogs are not exposed to unhealthy dogs outside their home at any time. Just use extreme caution.

Once your puppy has all his/her shots - feel free to take them out more (you can even take them to PetSmart - just don't put them on the floor or in a cart without protecting him from germs of dogs that could be sick.) Just like a newborn baby.

Supplies to have on hand:

Puppy crate for house training and safety (medium crate works well)

Washable bedding (towels work great)

Food and Water Bowls

Collar and Leash

A nice supply of chew toys

Grooming products such as; shampoo, brushes, nail clippers, tooth brush

Baby Gate or a Play Yard

Puppy Food - Purina Puppy Chow

Plan Ahead:

You should set up your puppies first appointment at your vet for about the second or third day after your puppy comes home.

Basset Hound Puppy Feeding Instructions:

Your puppy has been used to eating Purina Puppy Chow two times per day. We feed our puppies approximately 2/3 cup - two times per day. As your puppy grows you will need to change your feeding schedule to suite your puppies needs. By five or six months of age: Your puppy should be ready to go from 3/4 to 1 cup, 2 times per day. At one year: You should be able to feed your dogs 2 cups - two times per day.

Grooming:

You need to brush your dog at least two to three times per week. Rub your puppy around the ears, toes, under its arms and brush his/her teeth at least three times per week. Offer healthy and hard doggie treat in between. Be sure and clip your puppies toe nails once per week. Begin immediately! Dogs can have fear of toe nail clipping, but if you begin early it will be much easier for them to get used to it. Just be cafeful not to cut them too short. I have clipped their toenails for you prior to leaving here, along with a bath.
